I just got an Dell Optiplex 620, and since i got it all it brought me was trouble, i guest that's why i got such a bargain. WD Caviar SE SATA HD 7200 RPM X2 512 MB PC Samsung memory X 4 3.8GHzPentium 4 HT Processor This Machine has a total of 8 USB ports (2 in front) Ethernet adapter, Graphic card sound card on-board. It had windows XP pro installed and running normally but i couldn't get the computer to recognize my USB keyboard nor my Mouse, i cannot do any configuration in the bios because it doesn't have any PS 2 ports, so i use a serial Mouse and i connected it to my Network trying to install the needed drivers and when i restart the computer the serial mouse stop working, i tried to shut it that by pressing the power button (not holding it until it shuts off ) and while the windows was shutting down i got this blue screen witch i'm sure some of you have experience.

Thanx for the reply, I fix the blue screen problem but the mouse and Keyboard still doesn't work, I'm using and HP multimedia keyboard, and a dell optical mouse. I tried a dell keyboard and an other mouse in all the 8 different USB ports and they did not work, the light of the mouse turn's on normally when i plug t in and that about all it does, all i have to rely on is an old Serial mouse, I'll try what you told me and let you know how it went.

The problem is most likely because you're using a USB keyboard, not PS2. Try using a PS2 keyboard, and tap the delete key on startup to access the BIOS. Once there, look for the USB mouse/keyboard settings, and enable them. That will solve the non-responsive keyboard in the POST sequence. Now, to your original issue. While still in the BIOS, look for the 'halt on errors' settings. Change that setting from keyboard to no errors.

That way, if it's not detecting your keyboard in the POST sequence, it'll continue on to windows. Thanks for the replying. The dell gx620 has no ps/2 connctors, otherwise I would have already tried them. There are only USB's. And because of that I can't go into bios and do what you said - thats why I would like some input from the original treader, to know how/if he solved yhe problem.

And from what I understood from this model manual, the default settings for usb keyboard and mouse is on. So thats probably not the problem. I guess it's realy something to hardware level, like burnt logic or whatever. USB is great, until it stops working or giving headaches like bad connections, drives and inputs going randomly down, etc.

And since the last post was about 7 or 8 months old, I hardly can be acused of hijack someones else thread, after all, it was abandoned. I haven't reply to this treat because i haven't receive any relevant suggestions, i did buy a USB pci card it works after windows starts and not before so i cant make any changes to the bios if i wanted to. So, I dont even get to disk/windows. Just get stuck in post where it says to push F2 (or is it F12, can't remenber right.) to go into BIOS, but. I can't, there is no keyboard detected. It's simply a dead end. I think I'm going to ditch the dell and just put toghether a cheap system. Only regret I can't even reuse the dell desktop case, I kind off like it, but it's for BTX boards and more pain than it's worth it to make compatible with mATX. Thank you all.

My did the same thing said something about ' booting from floppy disk drive failure ' and i didn't have a floppy installed so i plug one in and it started normally because the drive 'C:' was the second booting device after the floppy, your bios setting might be difrent so i don't know if it will work for you. Windows works but you have no USB ports so your mouse and keyboard will not work and you can't even get into the BIOS, correct.? Please fill me in if I am missing something. All correct, except for the windows part.

My pc doesn't even get to hard drive/windows, just stops in the boot part where I should/but can't go into bios. Just sits there waiting for keyboard input, which is impossible (no usb's) and doesn't moves forward because it seems that the settings in bios are for the boot to stop when it finds some kind of error (no keyboard detected is one of them.). So, no windows, no bios, no keyboard, no nothing, just boot screen. It's a vivious circle. Well, kind of.

Then it gave me a hdd error. I connected a ide hdd and solve that one too.

Only the cursed keyboard error can't be removed, since the board can't detect the usb keyboard and there are no ps/2. Who was the genious that thought that it was time and a good idea to remove ps/2 connectors from motherboards? I think something like this would be your only option. Unfortunately, that won't work, because the dell gx620 doesn't posesses standard connectors, they have smaller and closer pins than standard connectors (those are like hdd ide or floppy pins ).

Theres a ser2 connector which as a serial port and a ps/2 port on those pins but I can't find the pinout diagram anywhere. If I could, I would try to connect to a cable similar to that one you refered that I have somewhere and would give it a shot. I know there's a dell cable that connects to this ser2 and add's a ps/2 plug in the back of the box, but even in ebay those are a little expensive, not to mention it may not solve the problem or even create a new one. I think the best is to get a new cheap mobo and reuse all the other stuff and a old atx case I have around. Are you talking about the main chipset or some smaller one? I see one chipset labeled nh82801gb and another one wich is unindentified but as a heatsink on top.

Then there are other smaller chips, one is broadcom, other smsc. However, I just gave the board a look and can't see anything burnt, everything seems to be ok.Do you have some more info? Thanks anyway. I'm not sure but it has, it's the one that right on top of the battery, It has Intel written on it,something to do with the USB ports. It does doesn't look burn but i had to look very closely to find that out.
