Here goes my assessment so far. Downloaded all 3 gigs in less than 3 hours. Installed ok. Couldn't get my D-LINK USB DWL-G 122 WIRELESS ADAPTER TO WORK.
I then realized that I should install the MB installation disk for 3 com drivers. The MB installation disk would not install. It told me 'UNSUPPORTED OS'. Why was I so naeve to hope that Win 7 would have all of the right drivers 'in the box'???
The built in MB sound card worked ok. I haven't tried to install the E-Mu sound yet. Haven't tried Cubase SX or Sonar 2.2 yet. I can't find the 'XP Mode'.
I thought that this was the way to get old software to run. I may only have a few days left to get the $ 99 'upgrade' so I need to evaluate this quickly.
BTW I'm using an ECS (Elitegroup Computers) A 780 GM-A Motherboard with Athlon 6000 Dual Core. I'M RUNNING THE 64 BIT VERSION OF THE RELEASE CANDIDATE btw UBUNTU 64 gets my video, sound AND D-LINK wireless going properly 'right out of the box' FOR FREE. Dan http://teachmedrums.com. I realize that NONE of my serious music application run on Ubuntu. However it is a fast internet appliance. Yes there were 64 bit Vista drivers on the OEM disk, but W7 is foreign to me. It doesn't ask to install drivers in the old way. The 'ADD HARDWARE' just looks around and doesn't seem to ask me to specify driver types or location of drivers. I got the Motherboard drivers disk to work, not by using any 'compatibilty mode' but by running the setup.exe in the Vista 64 bit folder of the disk.
The D-LINK USB DWL-G 122WIRELESS ADAPTER is another story however. It won't install under compatibility mode. I tried several different settings and it still didn't work. Is W7 64 bit version capable of PADDING 32 bit drivers with zeros so that they run on the 64 bit machine? This is my guess now, that only 64 bit drivers will run on the 64 bit OS that I have. If that is the case, I could go to 32 bit Windows 7, but what would the purpose be for that? I won't be able to take advantage of any cool 64 bit applications.
So I'm probably finished playing around with this. 8 hours invested and I can't even get on the net with the wireless and the EMU 1820 (which I just bought a year ago) won't run and it is a hassle finding drivers for this. My guess is that Cubase SX and Sonar 2.2 won't work either. OK I'm finally on here with the wireless, but I am using the 'XP virtual machine' to get here. Now the next question. I don't seem to get internet access yet on th W7 side.
Is there a PIPE function to tie this network and all other incompatible hardware over to the 64 bit side? I also notice that there is a way to turn on USB but not a switch to turn on PCI.
If I could do that, I would be able to use my E-MU 1820 through the VM. The other question. Is Microsoft planning on keeping this XP Virtual machine for Win 7??, or is this just an experiment?
